Ikanos and Gemino
Launch Industry-First ‘Applications Gateway’
to Automate and
Centralize Home Energy Management

Ikanos Fusiv® Vx185-based Platform Manages Home Power Consumption,
Overload Prevention, and Power Profiles based on Energy-Management Applications
from the Energy@home Association

FREMONT, Calif., and ROMA, Italy – Oct. 3,
2013 – Ikanos
Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: IKAN), a leading provider of advanced
broadband semiconductor and software products for the digital home, today
announced an industry first ‘applications gateway’ that hosts a range of
energy-management applications from the Energy@home Association using a single gateway
processor.  Built around Ikanos’ Fusiv® Vx185
processor and AGSuite software
from Gemino-Srl, the ‘applications gateway’ enables M2M (machine-to-machine)
communication in an ecosystem of connected and interacting appliances to
optimize energy consumption, increase efficiency, prevent overloads, and create
new services for consumers.  In homes
equipped with the gateway, residents will benefit from a user-friendly,
single-point energy management system controllable via an in-home console or a
smartphone. Ikanos and Gemino will showcase the gateway at the Energy@home stand
at European Utility Week 2013 in Amsterdam, October 15-17.
Ikanos’ Vx185 gateway processor integrates
ADSL2+ and VDSL2 broadband access and consumer-friendly interfaces to the home
network that provide connectivity to energy systems, appliances and controls
throughout the residence.  It also
incorporates a multi-bus architecture for best Java bytecode execution and just-in-time
(JIT) compilation performance, even under heavy network traffic loads.  Gemino’s AGSuite enables the simultaneous execution
of multiple Energy@home energy management applications in an OSGi (open
services gateway initiative) over JVM (java virtual machine) environment.
Enabling
the Smart Home
The new gateway platform meets the comprehensive
specifications for efficient home energy management established by Energy@home
for today’s smart homes.  In the smart home, devices of all kinds are
connected to a network, “aware” of how they are being used, able to inform the
user about their status, capable of reacting to signals from utilities, and controllable
by end users – anywhere and anytime – from their smartphones.
“Although
today’s homes connect to the electricity, gas, and telecommunications infrastructures,
the interfaces between these infrastructures and the home-metering
equipment are disparate and incompatible,” said Mauro Moioli, CEO of Gemino.  “But now, through a combination of advanced
broadband access and communication technologies, along with sophisticated
energy-management software, Ikanos and Gemino are collaborating with Energy@home
to create the foundation for the new smart home.”
Gemino’s AGSuite
implements an ‘applications gateway’ stack able to run third-party
applications, such as the Energy@home energy-management system, on embedded
processors.  These applications offer a
range of advanced energy management functions, including precise regulation of
power consumption by devices and subsystems, resulting in optimized in-home
energy usage.
“The
integration of Gemino’s AGSuite into the ‘applications gateway’ takes advantage
of the performance and distributed architecture of the Ikanos Vx185 gateway
processor,” said Jon Black, director of marketing at Ikanos.  “Basic gateway functions such as routing,
QoS, security, and voice are off-loaded from the Vx185’s host processor,
freeing the system to run Gemino’s AGSuite and Energy@home’s energy-management
system applications.”
“By
incorporating all of our Energy@home cloud-based energy management applications
into the gateway, we are providing users a true, integrated solution for
controlling energy use in their smart homes,” said Fabio Bellifemine, director
of the Energy@home Association.  “Ikanos
and Gemino have used an architecture that elegantly integrates our breadth of
energy-management applications with our technical specifications.”
About
the Energy@home Association
Energy@home is a non-profit association of
companies with the mission of developing and promoting specifications,
technologies, products and services for energy efficiency in smart homes. The Association was founded on July 2012 by Telecom Italia, Electrolux,
Enel Distribuzione, and Indesit Company. It aims at the widespread adoption
of a communication infrastructure that enables the provisioning of value-added services
based upon information exchanges related to energy usage, energy consumption
and energy tariffs in the home area network, including the smart meter and the
customer appliances. The Association today counts 18 companies as its members and
is an acknowledged contributor to the ZigBee Home Automation 1.2 standard that
was released in July 2013, incorporating the new features resulting from the
Energy@home technical specifications. For more information, visit http://www.energy-home.it.
About
Gemino-Srl
Gemino-srl is a young company founded in
2010 by a group of engineers with many years of experience in the design of
embedded devices for telecommunications, with a special focus on broadband, Access
Gateway and CPE engineering.
Thanks to the broadband expertise of its
employees, Gemino was able to develop, in a short time, the AGSuite: an application
gateway software solution available in a single license, which has gained the
recognition of companies that rely on the excellent quality of services it provides.
Through its new facilities in Shenzhen,
Gemino also supports the design, development and manufacturing of products for
networking and mass production services for electronic devices. For more
